Location

Although María la Gorda is conceived mostly for divers, it is also a wonderful option for eco tourism and all those who likes a quiet and isolated place. “María la Gorda’s” International Diving Center is located on the far West of Cuba, Guanahacabibes peninsula, in Pinar del Río province. It is a grate opportunity to discover this Reserve of the Biosphere and to experiment the feeling of have arrived to a paradise where lives lots of endemic species or almost in extinction. In this place remain virgin and protected, small beaches surrounded by pirate and treasure stories. The identity of who gave the village´s name is certainly unknown. It could be a Venezuelan native brought and abandoned by pirates against hers will or the Spanish sailor´s daughter victim of a shipwreck.

The fact is she establish here, 143 Km. Southwest from the Pinar del Rio City and decided to take advantage of the favourable location of the site providing refuge, food, water and fun to all who came in a pirate ship. It is suppose that more than 100 Spanish galleons are sinking in these bottoms and people talks about fabulous hided treasures such as the Mexican City of Mérida.

Private and quite, Maria la Gorda is famous by their transparent bottoms, classified as one of the first in the world and for many, as the best in Cuba for diving. Canto del Veril marine platform is around 300 meters from the coast, that´s why its 50 diving points are so close. Here, divers can enjoy of its amazing and colourful marine flora due to the gorgonian variety that live there as well as the black coral reef considered the biggest reserves of the entire Island. The marine fauna is marvellous and plentiful, mostly in August caused by the whale-shark visit. More than 20 species of coral and lots of small and medium size fishes, lobsters, morays and crabs can be frequently seen in these bottoms.

The village is situated in a combined environment where the captivating and heterogenic forest is considered a natural hideaway. Much kind of endemic birds, especially Green-Woodpecker, trogon and parrot nest here like others migratory birds. Besides, Maria la Gorda has the excellent habitat for mammalians, amphibians and reptiles such as: iguanas, frogs, and tree-rat. Invertebrates are highly abundant too and the espeleo fauna become an especial attractive with hot caves as a principal biotype. The vegetation of this place is quite varied: humid forests always green, coastal weed, vegetation of: rocked coastal and sanded coastal, of lagoon and some others. Maria de la Gorda flora counts with an approximate number of 70 species, of them 17 are endemics of the place. An example inside these unique species group, is the smallest plant in the world with flowers and fruits, which is under the 0.3 Mm. This shows the landscapes diversity that is one of the main attractive of the place.

Operation Method

The village offers lodging, buffet and a la carte meals (in its 2 restaurants), national and international cocktails in the snack bar, day and night activities, a unique coral reefs ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving and underwater photography, optional sales inside the natural reserve and a professional staff. All to makes you feel like in a natural and scuba diving paradise.

Currency

Cuba accepts only Convertibles Cuban Pesos (CUC), traveller checks and Visa y MasterCard credit cards, except the ones issue in USA banks.

Distribution

Maria la Gorda has 55 comfortable and small, 40 doubles and 10 triples. Of these rooms 30 are in first line of shore, 12 have not sea-view directly and another 20 are in second line of shore surrounded by vegetation. There are two restaurants, a bar, a store, international phone service, medical attention 24 hours, rent a car agency and International Marina Service (Immigration, Customs, Coast Guards and Health authorities, and diesel, water, and laundry services as well as a food market)
